Millennial Spotlight: Bobby Chase

Bobby Chase is the CEO of Next Evolution Media Production, a full service production company specializing in Commercial and Corporate video production in Upstate New York. He is also the Co-creator and Showrunner of the comedy television series, Welcome Home.
Before venturing off on his own, Bobby worked in the advertising industry as a Producer/Director for CBS6 and The CW15. His work has appeared on major networks such as CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC, and The CW Network.

How did you get started with New Evolution Media Production and Welcome Home?

After working in the advertising industry for just over 8 years, I was laid off by my then current employer. It might have been the greatest thing that could have happened to me. At the time, I was stressed out, burnt out, and tired of the corporate system. I also realized that the industry in my area wasn’t evolving very much and agencies were not taking many risks. This caused what seemed to be a lot of clutter where nothing really stood out. So, I took the lay-off as a sign to start my own company and help clients create commercials and videos that are more memorable.

What’s been the hardest part about starting your own business?

For me, the hardest part about starting Next Evolution Media Production was really just learning everything that it takes to start a business and to run every facet of the company. When you work for a corporate company or even a smaller business, usually they have departments that take care of certain aspects of the company. For example, Accounting, Marketing, and Sales. But when you’re starting your own, you need to do everything until you can build up enough capital to hire a staff.

When feeling stressed or overwhelmed, what do you do to unwind and refocus?

Sometimes when I get stressed out or overwhelmed, I usually either try and go for a run, have a few drinks, or watch some sort of comedy. I often write screenplays and teleplays which are highly infused with comedy. Life tends to either be a pain in the ass, ridiculous, or stressful, so I like to comment on life and society through comedy.

What resources have you found helpful in blazing your own trail?

  • Quickbooks – Accounting software that helps keep organized.
  • MileIQ – Tracks your mileage automatically.
  • Adobe – The bread and butter of my business. I use Adobe products for editing, motion graphics, audio, & graphic design.
  • Thumbtack & FilmandTVpro – Helpful in the search for jobs.

  • Startup Diary & Startup Creative – Hosts Ron Valderrama & Michael Campo bring you along for the ride as they grow their startups in the film & TV industry.
  • #AskGaryVee show – If you guys haven’t heard about Gary Vaynerchuk, get on it. He’s an amazing entrepreneur with great energy, advice, and motivation for his viewers.

If you could spend one day with any famous person, who would it be and why?

There’s quite a few actually, but one that always comes to mind is, Seth McFarlane (the creator of Family Guy & Ted.) He started out as an animator and transformed his comedy career into a multi-million-dollar business. He’s multi-talented and has an infectious love for comedy, something that I admire. I think a day with him would be incredibly informative and insanely hilarious.

What’s currently on your radar? Tell us about your latest project.

Aside from various television commercials and corporate video productions, I am currently in pre-production for season two of the television comedy series, Welcome HomeI am a writer, director, producer, and editor, so it keeps me pretty busy. The show has had some success in its first season and has been picked up for a television run by TUFFTV. You can also find it on StreamNowTV, Roku, and AppleTV.

What advice do you have for today’s millennial professional?

Don’t listen to people, listen to inspiration. I don’t mean you should completely block people out. A lot of people are going to tell you what they think you should be doing or even try to talk you out of what you want to be doing. You know your style and brand better than anyone else. And even if all that isn’t clear to you yet, it will be as you stay true to yourself and listen to what inspires you.
